If you rush into the testing room last minute for your fire promotion test in disrepair then you may have wasted all the valuable preparation you have done. Make sure you walk in to the test room ready to go by following a few little tips to help you out.

When you sit down to take your firefighter promotional exam make sure you do not let yourself get distracted by anything. You have worked way too hard on your firefighter promotional exam prep to let a silly test day distractions mess with your head.

  1. Have a Snack

Having your stomach growl in the middle of a test is the worst. It is embarrassing because you know everyone around you can hear it in the silent testing room, and being hungry can be so distracting and interfere with your focus. Before you get to the exam room, have a healthy snack. Now remember, this is not the time to try out the new fire hot chips you have been saving for a special occasion. You don’t want your stomach grumbling for another reason. Have a safe snack, and some water so you have the energy needed to take your firefighter promotional exam.

  1. Use the Restroom

You do not want to have to get the sudden urge to use the restroom in the middle of taking your firefighter promotional exam. Once you get to the location of the exam take a quick bathroom break so you won’t have the urge to go mid-test and interrupt your concentration.

  1. Turn Your Phone Off

Or even better leave it in the car. Having your phone ring in the middle of taking your firefighter promotional exam is a big no no. Before you even enter the exam room turn your phone off, or don’t even bring it in with you. It would be so distracting to everyone in the room taking the test if a phone went off, so just don’t be that person.

  1. Get Comfortable

Before you start taking your firefighter promotional exam you want to make sure you pick a comfortable spot. Is the desk wobbling or the chair, is there a draft? Make sure you get to the testing location early so you are able to find a seat that you feel the most comfortable in. There are so many little things that can distract you from your test so give yourself a head start by trying to avoid a distracting seat.

  1. Breathe

Another good thing to do once you find the perfect spot to take your firefighter promotional exam is just take some deep breaths and relax for a moment before the exam begins. You do not want your heart to be racing from rushing to find a spot and having to start the test the second you get there. Allow yourself those extra few minutes before the exam starts to get yourself settled.

The Takeaway

The potential for distractions when you take your firefighter promotional exam seems limitless. Be mindful of potential distractions to yourself and others so they can be avoided and you can ace your firefighter promotional exam and get promoted in the fire service.
